Director of R&D

What you'll do
The Director of R&D leads the technical team in developing and scaling-up our innovative coating solution. The Director of R&D is the primary contributor in defining and executing the company’s technology vision, strategy, and plans for growth. The role entails improving, and resolving, certain technological challenges of the company. In addition to coordinating the technical staff, the role entails interfacing with external stakeholders such as customers, development partners, and investors.

Key Responsibilities
■ Lead the definition and execution of the Company’s technology vision, including defining roadmap, milestones, timelines, experiment plans, and activities
■ Effectively communicate the company’s technology overview, status, and progress to industry partners, investors, federal agencies
■ Manage and guide the technical team, creating a collaborative environment that promotes effective teamwork and maximum impact
■ Develop new technological solutions and reduce time to practice through implementation of state-of-the-art testing
■ Ensure that best-in-class technology standards and lab operations are in the company’s DNA
■ Build partnerships to effectively manage complex R&D projects, including coordinating internal and external resources (e.g., customers, service providers, federal agencies)
Required Qualifications
■ BS or MS or PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field
■ 5+ years Industry or R&D experience with advanced coatings and/or
■ 5+ years Industry or R&D experience with battery materials synthesis, processing, and characterization and/or
■ 5+ years Industry or R&D experience with battery cell design, testing, and troubleshooting
■ Effective and confident communicator, collaborator, and project leader
■ Demonstrated ability to effectively manage people
■ Ability to align multiple points of view and articulate a shared common goal
■ Excellent analytical and time-management skills

Battery Materials Scientist

What you’ll do
We are looking for a Battery Materials Scientist to support and lead the development of our drop-in solution. Your role entails working in close collaboration with internal teams, with Senior Management and with External Stakeholders to iterate and create meaningful results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage research projects focusing on material processing scale-up, material & electrochemical characterization, and Li-ion cell development and testing
  • Design and execute experiments to validate electrochemical performance of battery prototypes, incl. troubleshooting and iteration
  • Collaborate with industry partners to develop commercial cell prototypes based on Volexion's materials
  • Provide guidance and manage a technical team to maintain lab equipment and ensure operational continuity

Required Qualifications
  • B.S./M.S./PhD in electrochemistry, materials science, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in battery materials synthesis, processing, and characterization
  • 3+ years of experience in battery cell formulation and testing
  • Ability to lead independent and joint research projects to success
  • Effective communicator, collaborator, and project leader
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience with cathode surface coating and/or doping technologies
  • Direct experience with commercial-scale Li-ion cell production and testing
  • Knowledge of next-generation Li-ion technologies

Battery Materials Engineer

What you’ll do
We are looking for a Battery Materials Engineer to support and lead the development of our drop-in solution. Your role entails working in close collaboration with Volexion’s internal teams, with Senior Management and with External Stakeholders to iterate and create meaningful results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Graphene precursor and battery materials synthesis and testing
  • Seek and validate optimization and scale-up opportunities
  • Characterization of materials’ physical, chemical and electrical performance (e.g., SEM, XPS)
  • Build prototype batteries and validate electrochemical performance
  • Develop and maintain Volexion’s operating procedures and quality control system
  • Generate reports and presentations for customers, investors, and internal deliverables

Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or B.S.in chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or related field
  • Ability to lead joint research projects with industrial customers
  • Effective communicator, collaborator, and project leader
  • Ability to build out new process systems and develop best-in-class Operation and Quality Systems
  • Proficiency in Excel or Matlab or equivalent software for data management and analysis
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in materials synthesis and materials characterization
  • 3+ years of experience in Li-ion electrode formulation, battery prototyping, and electrochemical testing
  • Knowledge of commercial and emerging Li-ion battery materials
  • Experience with battery systems (design, development, prototyping)
