Senior Battery Materials Scientist - Chicago, IL, USA

What you’ll do
We are looking for a Senior Battery Materials Scientist to support and lead the scale-up of our drop-in solution. Your role entails working in close collaboration with Internal Teams, with Senior Management and with External Stakeholders to iterate and create meaningful results. This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage research projects focusing on material processing scale-up, material and electrochemical characterization, and commercial cell development and testing
  • Design and execute experiments to validate electrochemical performance of battery prototypes from coin cells to MLP / cylindrical cells
  • Design and execute experiments to troubleshoot and understand cell-level issues
  •  Collaborate with industry partners to help develop commercial cell prototypes around Volexion's materials
  •  Supervise a technical team to maintain lab operation and equipment
Required Qualifications
  • B.S./M.S. in electrochemistry, materials science, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in Li-ion material synthesis, processing, and characterization
  • 3+ years of experience in Li-ion cell formulation and testing
  •  Ability to lead independent and joint research projects to success
  •  Effective communicator, collaborator, and project leader
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in electrochemistry, materials science, or related field
  • Direct experience with cathode surface coating and/or doping technologies
  •  Direct experience with commercial-scale Li-ion cell production and testing
  •  Knowledge of next-generation Li-ion technologies (e.g., solid state)

  • Seek and validate optimization and scale-up opportunities
  • Characterization of materials’ physical, chemical and electrical performance (e.g., SEM, XPS)
  • Build prototype batteries and validate electrochemical performance
  • Develop and maintain Volexion’s operating procedures and quality control system
  • Generate reports and presentations for customers, investors, and internal deliverables

Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or B.S.in chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or related field
  • Ability to lead joint research projects with industrial customers
  • Effective communicator, collaborator, and project leader
  •  Ability to build out new lab spaces and develop best-in-class Operation and Quality Systems
  • Proficiency in Excel or Matlab or equivalent software for data management and analysis

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in materials synthesis and materials characterization
  • 3+ years of experience in electrode formulation, battery prototyping, and Echem testing
  •  Knowledge of commercial and emerging Li-ion battery materials
  •  Experience with battery systems (design, development, prototyping)

Laboratory Supervisor - Chicago, IL, USA

What you’ll do
We are looking for a Laboratory Supervisor to actively enable, support and guide the development of our drop-in solution. Your role entails working in close collaboration with Volexion’s internal teams, with Senior Management and with External Stakeholders. This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain Volexion’s laboratory and pilot line equipment
  • Ensure safe, smooth and reliable operation
  • Develop and maintain Volexion’s operating procedures and quality control system
  • Operate graphene synthesis and battery materials production equipment
  • Characterize materials’ physical, chemical and electrical performance (e.g., SEM, XPS)
  • Build and test prototype batteries
  • Identify, suggest, design and implement process and operational improvement opportunities
Required Qualifications
  • Lab setup, lab operation, lab management and improvement tools (including EHS)
  • Laboratory and mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
  • Procurement and inventory management of chemicals, consumables, parts, and tools
  • Materials characterization equipment (e.g., SEM, XPS, TGA, electrochemical, titration)
  • Battery cell assembly equipment and processes
  • Battery cell testing (e.g., battery cyclers)
  • Organizational skills and ability to communicate (oral and written) with a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience in material science laboratory and pilot line production
  • 3+ years of experience in battery prototyping and testing
  • Knowledge of commercial and emerging Li-ion battery materials and systems
